Functional Skills - English (Online)
Overview
This FREE adult-only (19+) part-time course is ideal if you want to improve your English skills for everyday life, work or further study.
You can start online at any time and study flexibly, with multiple daytime and evening sessions available each week. This makes it easier to fit learning around your job, family and other commitments.
Don't worry if you have been out of education for some time. Our experienced tutors specialise in supporting adult learners and will guide you step by step. You will learn at your own pace in small, discreet and supportive classes with other adults.
You can progress through the Functional Skills levels and gain nationally recognised qualifications.

What will I study?
At each level, you will develop your ability to:
- Listen, understand and respond in a range of everyday situations
- Build your vocabulary and understand how words are used
- Read everyday texts with accuracy and confidence
- Write clearly using correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
To study online, you must:
- Attend an in-person open day (course registration) - see below
- Be an adult aged 19 and over
- Be eligible for funding (checked upon application).
Before you can study this course online, you must attend an open day to register on this course, receive your log-in details and complete an initial assessment where we will identify your current working level and give you further information. If you feel unsure about using tools such as email, Microsoft Word or Microsoft Teams, do not worry. We will support you step by step. You will have guidance from an assessor throughout your studies, and we also offer free short digital and IT courses for adults to help you build confidence before starting a qualification like this.

While this course may be offered to you free of charge, failure to complete the course may result in a £125 administration fee. This fee covers the administrative costs associated with non-completion.
