Our Transition and Progression Team provides tailored support for applicants who may require additional guidance when moving into college study.
The Transition and Progression Team oversees the initial transition for applicants who declare any of the following on their college application:
- They have a current or unspent criminal conviction or charges pending
- They are/have been home educated
- They are studying in an Alternative Learning Provider
- They are on a reduced timetable/in the alternative setting within their mainstream school education.
We recognise that progressing into the full-time college provision may be a difficult step and our aim is to start the transition process as soon as possible, which may include visits to the college, transition and careers meetings, taster sessions, meetings with the curriculum team (in addition to the regular open events and Meet the Tutor sessions).
We may also arrange maths and English assessments for those who are not planning on taking their GCSE exams, to ascertain their level of working, to enable us to ensure their application is right for them at this time, and also explore other routes if needed.
In some cases a bespoke programme is sought to meet the individual needs of a student if they have had a difficult personal or educational journey or have demonstrated significant barriers and challenges in education in the past.
To ensure an in-depth, bespoke transition plan is in place for individuals, we work closely with various agencies, including schools, alternative providers, Probation and the Youth Justice Service. In addition, we link internally with The Inclusion Service Team, Safeguarding Team, Careers and Employability Team and Student Welfare and Wellbeing Team.
On completion of our transition work, we introduce individual students to the Student Welfare and Wellbeing Team to continue with the transition support and to offer ongoing support throughout their courses.
