What is the Experimental Art course?

The Experimental Art course at West Notts College is a creative adult art course that encourages you to explore your imagination, experiment with different materials and develop your own artistic style.

Suitable for complete beginners and those with previous art experience, this welcoming course gives you the opportunity to explore a wide range of creative techniques in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Inspired by music, emotions, nature and seasonal themes, you'll discover new ways to express yourself while building confidence and practical art skills.


Who should study the Experimental Art course?

This course is ideal for adults aged 19 and over who:

  • Enjoy being creative and trying new things
  • Want to explore different art techniques
  • Are beginners looking for a relaxed introduction to art
  • Already have artistic experience and want to experiment further
  • Want to develop confidence through creative activities
  • Enjoy learning alongside other adults

No previous art qualifications or experience are required.


What will you learn on the Experimental Art course?

You'll experiment with a variety of creative techniques, including:

  • Painting
  • Watercolours
  • Collage
  • Clay sculpture
  • Lino printing
  • Sensory art
  • Mixed media techniques

You'll also develop:

  • Creative confidence
  • Your own artistic style
  • Ideas generation and experimentation skills

The course provides opportunities to celebrate your achievements, including showcasing your work in a final exhibition.


When does the Experimental Art course start?

  • Wednesday 9 September to Wednesday 16 December 2026 (14 weeks)

When do classes take place?

  • Wednesdays, 5.30pm to 8.00pm

How much does the Experimental Art course cost?

  • FREE for eligible new learners*
  • £5 per session for returning learners on a low income*
  • £10 per session for returning learners on a higher income*

How is the Experimental Art course delivered?

This face-to-face course is delivered through practical art workshops at West Notts College's Derby Road campus in Mansfield.

You'll work with a range of materials and techniques while receiving guidance and encouragement from experienced tutors in a supportive adult learning environment.
