What is the Crochet course?
The Crochet course at West Notts College is a practical adult craft course designed to help you learn and develop crochet skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Whether you are completely new to crochet or want to improve your existing techniques, this course will help you build confidence while creating your own handmade projects.
You'll learn the foundations of crochet, starting with basic stitches and gradually progressing onto more advanced techniques. With guidance from an experienced tutor, you'll develop the skills needed to create your own crochet items, from small projects to larger designs.
If you've been away from education for some time, don't worry. Our tutor has many years of experience supporting adult learners returning to the classroom and will help you every step of the way.
After completing the course, you'll have the opportunity to progress onto the next available crochet course to continue developing your skills. Please note, that as a returning learner, this would then involve a cost per session. The course tutor will explain the options during the course, but feel free to get in touch should you require further information.
Who should study the Crochet course?
This course is ideal for adults aged 19 and over who:
- Want to learn crochet from the beginning
- Enjoy creative hobbies and handmade crafts
- Would like to develop a relaxing new skill
- Want to create gifts, accessories or home items
- Have some crochet experience and want to improve their techniques
- Are returning to education in a friendly adult learning environment.
No previous crochet experience is required.
What will you learn on the Crochet course?
During the course, you will learn:
- Basic crochet techniques and terminology
- How to create foundation chains
- Different crochet stitches, including trebles
- How to read and follow simple patterns
- Creating projects using granny squares and other techniques
- Developing confidence with different yarns and methods
- Planning and creating your own crochet projects
You'll progress at your own pace, developing the skills and confidence to create handmade items you can enjoy or share with others.

Courses are available at the following dates:
Tuesday classes
Ideal for intermediate or returning learners.
- Tuesday 8 September to Tuesday 15 December 2026 (14 weeks)
- Tuesday 5 January to Tuesday 23 March 2027 (11 weeks)
- Tuesday 13 April to Tuesday 22 June 2027 (10 weeks)
Wednesday classes
Ideal for beginners.
- Wednesday 9 September to Wednesday 16 December 2026 (14 weeks)
- Wednesday 6 January to Wednesday 24 March 2027 (11 weeks)
- Wednesday 14 April to Wednesday 23 June 2027 (10 weeks)
When do classes take place?
- Tuesdays, 5.45pm to 8.00pm
- Wednesdays, 5.45pm to 8.00pm
How much does the Crochet course cost?
- FREE for eligible new learners*
- £5 per session for returning learners on a low income*
- £10 per session for returning learners on a higher income*

How is the Crochet course delivered?
The course is delivered through face-to-face practical sessions at West Notts College's Derby Road campus in Mansfield.
You'll learn in a small, supportive adult-only group with demonstrations, practical activities and individual guidance from experienced tutors.
