Overview

IMPORTANT
Applications are now open for academic year 2026/2027, but our full-time courses are still being finalised. If your chosen course changes, we'll contact you to offer a suitable alternative that matches your goals. For more information, call our Enquiries Team on 0808 100 3626.

This course can be studied alongside 2 A Levels or 1 A Level and 1 vocational course (as part of our 2+1 offer). When choosing your other A Level/s, you can pick Physics OR Computer Science - you can't choose both due to subject overlap.

Electronics is central to modern technology. Our A Level in Electronics gives you a strong foundation in electronic principles and practical engineering skills. You’ll understand how electronic systems are designed, analysed, tested and implemented - combining theory with hands-on work in our well-equipped labs. The qualification builds your problem-solving ability and prepares you for further study or a career in engineering, computing, telecommunications, or other technical fields.

What does it combine with?

What our students say

Evie talks to us about the exciting opportunities studying A Levels with us has presented her, including how it differs from school, using the West Notts Travel Pass, and her plans to progress onto university.

What will I study?

The course covers key electronic concepts and practical techniques, including:

  • System synthesis and circuit analysis – designing and understanding complete electronic systems
  • DC electrical circuits – how current, voltage and resistance interact in real and theoretical circuits
  • Input and output subsystems – sensors, transducers, displays and how electronic systems interface with the real world
  • Semiconductor components and logic systems – diodes, transistors, logic gates, microcontroller-based systems
  • Operational amplifiers and signal processing – amplifying, filtering and conditioning signals in analogue systems
  • Energy, power and system performance – efficiency and practical behaviour of electronic devices.

Across the two years, you’ll link theory directly to practice with real circuit building, testing and troubleshooting.

  • Entry requirements
    • GCSE Maths grade 5-9
    • GCSE Double Science grade 6/5 plus two other GCSEs grade 4-9

    OR

    • GCSE Triple Science grade 6/5/5 with a 6 in Physics plus another GCSE grade 4-9
    • An overall average of a grade 4*.

*To work out your grade average, add all of your grades together and divide by the number of GCSEs you've taken. If you need help, please contact our Enquiries Team on 0808 100 3626 or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

  • Assessment

This course is assessed by written examinations and a Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) project, reflecting how electronics is used in industry and higher education. The practical NEA component allows you to plan and execute an extended electronics project, often involving programming and system integration.

  • Progression

Further study at university-level* in engineering, computer science, telecommunications and related degrees.

*As we are a partner college of Nottingham Trent University (NTU), you may qualify for various benefits should you choose to apply to NTU after completing your college course. This could include a Progress NTU offer, where you would receive an offer one grade below their standard offer. For further details, please call us on 0808 100 3626.
