With over 70,000 HGV vacancies in the UK, today is the perfect time to consider starting a career within the logistics and LGV sector.
As the ideal pre-employment training course, this programme will allow you to gain the essential industry skills and knowledge required to secure a job within the sector whilst gaining nationally recognised certifications. What’s more, you will learn new skills and meet new colleagues which will help you to find the confidence to secure your first role in the sector.
Before starting the course, an information and selection day will be held on Wednesday 4 March.
On the selection day, you will be required to complete assessments in numeracy, literacy, and Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) operation to ensure you meet the necessary standards for enrolment in this programme.
The course will then start on Monday 9 March and run at the Derby Road campus and Peter Smythe Transport Training Ltd, Sutton-in-Ashfield. This course runs throughout the year, so new dates are to be released soon.

The course is completely FREE for anyone aged 19 or over (on 31 August 2025) and earning less than £25,750. You must also live in England and NOT in one of the locations listed here.
Applicants aged 19-23 must already have a full level 2 qualification to be eligible (eg. 5 GCSEs at grade C or above).
All applicants must already hold a B car full driving licence with less than six penalty points.
Prior to starting the course, you will need to attend a selection day where you will complete assessments in numeracy, literacy, and Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) operation to ensure you meet the necessary standards for enrolment in this programme.
After successfully completing the first stage, you will then progress onto the NVQ in Driving Goods Vehicles - Level 2 course, a theoretical and practical course where you can gain a Category C (Class 2) large goods driving licence. During this time, you will also be studying online for the DVSA examinations.
