What is the Award in Education and Training (AET) course?

The Award in Education and Training (AET) is an entry-level teaching qualification for adults who want to teach or train in further education, adult learning or the workplace. Previously known as Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS), this nationally recognised qualification provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to begin a career in teaching.

If you have experience in your industry and want to share your knowledge with others, this course is an excellent first step. It also helps you decide whether a career in teaching is right for you before progressing to higher-level teaching qualifications.

Who should study the Award in Education and Training (AET) qualification?

This course is suitable for adults aged 19+ who:

Are considering a career change into teaching or training.
Have industry knowledge or professional experience they would like to pass on.
Want to become a lecturer, trainer or assessor in further education or workplace learning.
Need an introductory teaching qualification to support career progression.
Have been away from education and would benefit from learning in a supportive environment.

No previous teaching experience is required.

What will you learn on the Award in Education and Training (AET) course?

Throughout this 12-week course, you will develop the essential knowledge and skills needed to plan, deliver and assess effective learning.

Topics include:

Understanding how people learn and different learning styles.
Cognitive behaviour and the learning process.
Planning engaging lessons and schemes of work.
Using differentiation to meet individual learner needs.
Motivating and engaging learners.
Planning, recording and monitoring assessments.
Creating inclusive learning experiences.
Delivering a practical microteach session, where you will plan and teach a short lesson that is observed by your tutor and fellow learners.

By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to begin your journey into teaching or training.

The course fee is:

Free for eligible learners*
£425 for learners who are not eligible for funding

How is the Award in Education and Training (AET) course delivered?

This adult-only, part-time course is taught through weekly evening classes in small, supportive groups.

You will learn from experienced tutors who understand the needs of adult learners and provide guidance throughout your studies. Teaching combines classroom discussions, practical activities and lesson planning, helping you build confidence while developing real teaching skills.

As part of the qualification, you will complete a practical microteach session to demonstrate what you have learned.

What qualification will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve the Award in Education and Training (AET).

This qualification can help you progress into teaching, training or assessing roles and provides a pathway to further teacher training qualifications.

Entry requirements
This course is only available to adults aged 19+.
- A keen interest in teaching and learning
- Ideally have a Level 2 in literacy
- Good understanding of IT (preferably Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint).
If you feel unsure about using tools such as email, Microsoft Word or Microsoft Teams, do not worry. We will support you step by step. You will have guidance from an assessor throughout your studies, and we also offer free short digital and IT courses for adults to help you build confidence before starting a qualification like this.
Assessment
Ongoing theory and practical tasks.
Progression
This course will give you the foundations to study a certificate in education (teacher training).
This can be studied through NTU in Mansfield* which is located at our Derby Road campus.
