Overview

This FREE 12-week course is tailored for women who are considering a career in the construction industry or wishing to learn basic skills for household DIY projects. The course provides a range of basic training concentrating on the main elements of the industry in a small supportive women only environment.

Upon completion you will have the option to advance your skills by pursuing a Level 2 course in one of the main construction trades.

The course runs on Thursday and Fridays from 9.00am-4.00pm.

Cost

FREE* - The college will cover the cost of training, test and the CSCS card (on successful completion of the course).

*New learners only. Returning learners would be required to pay the full course fee.

What will I study?

Health and Safety (Level 1 Qualification)

Overview of safety protocols in construction
Understanding and implementing health and safety regulations
Practical applications in a construction setting.

Bricklaying

Introduction to basic bricklaying techniques
Hands-on experience in brickwork construction
Understanding different types of bricks and mortar.

Joinery

Essential principles of joinery
Hands-on practice with basic joinery tools
Building foundational skills in woodworking.

Plastering

Basics of plastering techniques
Application and smoothing of plaster on different surfaces
Understanding the role of plastering in construction.

Tiling

Introduction to tile types and materials
Practical tiling skills for various surfaces
Grouting and finishing techniques.

Plumbing

Basics of plumbing systems and components
Hands-on experience in basic plumbing installations
Understanding plumbing safety practices.

Painting and decorating

Fundamentals of painting and decorating
Hands-on experience with different painting techniques
Choosing colour schemes and applying finishes.

Entry requirements
- There are no specific entry requirements to study this course
- Please note - this course is for women aged 19+ only (on 31 August 2025).
Assessment
You will be required to undertake a test at the end of the course which demonstrates your achievement of all of the learning outcomes and course criteria for the qualification.
The qualification is graded pass or fail.
