Want to build roads, railways, drainage systems, and the structures people use every day? This course is the perfect starting point for a future in construction and engineering.
This practical course is all about learning by doing. You’ll spend time developing real skills used on site, working with materials, tools and equipment while learning how major projects are built safely and professionally.
If sitting in a classroom all day isn’t for you, this course offers a more hands-on way to learn and progress.
What will I study?
Modules include:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
- Preparing and mixing construction materials
- Setting out secondary dimensional work in construction
- Carrying out basic construction operations
- Construction plant and equipment awareness.
What you'll learn:
- How to work safely on construction sites
- Groundworks and site preparation
- Installing drainage systems
- Mixing and using concrete
- Laying block paving and slabs
- Measuring, setting out and levels
- Teamwork and communication skills
- How the construction industry works.

Green CSCS Card Preparation
As part of the course, you can be supported to achieve an approved Health and Safety qualification and prepare for the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, which are key requirements when applying for the Green CSCS Card.
The Green CSCS Card is recognised across the construction industry and can help you progress into site-based work experience, apprenticeships, and employment.
Trips and visits
You may have the opportunity to visit live construction environments and engineering locations to see how the industry works in the real world. Trips and visits may include:
- Major construction sites
- Rail engineering environments
- Highway and infrastructure projects
- Plant and machinery demonstrations
- Construction training centres
- Employer workplaces and depots.
These experiences help bring learning to life and give you an insight into future careers.
