What is the AAT certificate in accounting course?

The AAT Certificate in Accounting - Level 2 is an adult-only (19+) part-time course designed to provide a strong foundation in accounting, bookkeeping and business finance.

You will also explore key topics that are increasingly important in today's business environment, including technology, ethics, sustainability and communication. These themes are integrated throughout the qualification to help you develop skills that are relevant to modern accounting roles.

Who should study the AAT certificate in accounting qualification?

This course is ideal for adults aged 19+ who:

  • Are new to accounting and finance
  • Want to start a career in bookkeeping or accounting
  • Are looking to gain a recognised AAT qualification
  • Wish to upskill for career progression or a career change
  • Have been away from education and would like to return to studying in a supportive environment.

What will you learn on the AAT certificate in accounting course?

During this course, you will study the following AAT units:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping – learn manual and digital bookkeeping systems including the associated documents and processes
  • Principles of Bookkeeping Controls – explore control accounts, journals and reconciliations
  • Principles of Costing – develop knowledge of principles of basic costing and how cost systems can be an important source of information in business decision-making
  • The Business Environment – delve into key business concepts, legal systems, principles of contract law and the legal implications of setting up a business.

When does the AAT certificate in accounting course start?

  • Daytime option - Thursday 10 September 2026
  • Evening option - TBC.

When do classes take place?

  • Daytime option
    • Attendance - One day per week
    • Current timetable - Thursdays, 9.30am-3.15pm.
  • Evening option
    • Attendance - Two evenings per week
    • Current timetable - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-8pm.

How much does the AAT certificate in accounting course cost?

The course fee is £1,250.

The course fee includes:

  • Tuition
  • Access to the online learning platform
  • Hard copy course textbooks
  • Your first attempt at each exam.

Don’t let paying for the course hold you back from achieving your goals. You can split the cost of this course over four instalments. If you wish to pay in instalments, you will be required to pay 25% (£312.50) of the total fee on the day of enrolment and a Direct Debit mandate would then to be completed to enable the college to collect further three payments of £312.50. The payments will be taken on the date you choose on the Direct Debit mandate form.

How is the AAT certificate in accounting course delivered?

This course is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining classroom-based teaching with structured online learning activities.

You will attend lessons at college, either two evenings per week or one day per week, and complete approximately 3 to 6 hours of online study each week before your next session. This flexible course allows you to develop your accounting knowledge while balancing work, family and other commitments.
