Welcome to our exciting beginner course, specifically designed for individuals who are eager to pursue a successful career in carpentry and joinery. This course will equip you with the essential skills, knowledge, and behaviours necessary to excel in further study, apprenticeships, or full-time employment.

Throughout the course, we will provide comprehensive theoretical - what you need to know and practical - hands on sessions, to put into practice what you have learnt to ensure a well-rounded understanding of carpentry and joinery. You'll have the opportunity to participate in extensive enrichment activities, including industry and community-based projects, as well as engaging trips and visits. Our esteemed partnerships with industry employers such as Persimmon Homes, Willmott Dixon, Mansfield District Council, and Bolsover Council will provide exciting work-related opportunities. These partnerships ensure that you develop the skills and expertise that employers in the carpentry and joinery industry actively seek.

The carpentry and joinery industry offers a diverse range of roles, including house builder, specialising in door, door frame, and window repair/restoration. There is also potential for progression into senior positions such as site supervisor or construction manager.

Carpentry is a highly skilled trade and craft that involves the cutting, shaping, and installation of various building materials during the construction of buildings, ships, timber bridges, concrete formwork, and more. By becoming a proficient carpenter, you'll be part of creating structures that stand the test of time.

Located at The Old Brewery in the centre of Mansfield, our dedicated construction campus boasts top-of-the-range facilities. With practical areas and classrooms in close proximity, you'll have the perfect environment to refine your specialist skills and techniques relevant to your chosen trade. What will I study?

During the course, you will develop a range of skills

  • Health and safety
  • Communication with others
  • Constructing mortice and tenon joints
  • Fixing architrave and skirting
  • Cutting and shaping wood.

You will be expected to study Functional Skills English and Maths throughout your programme of study.

You will predominantly study via practical sessions although theory sessions will also be included. You will have the opportunity to participate in extensive enrichment activities, such as industry and community-based projects, as well as trips and visits.
