National Extended Diploma in Civil Engineering (Advanced) - Level 3


Designed for those looking to specialise in civil engineering, this course provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto a variety of pathways including university degrees, employment or apprenticeships. 

Whether you’re looking to become a civil engineer, structural engineer or quantity surveyor, this course will support you in taking the next steps towards your chosen career.

Today the construction industry is dynamic and demanding. Employers require candidates to have certain technical skills, appropriate industry knowledge and understanding and also the ability to demonstrate employability skills. These skills enable you to adapt to the roles needed to survive in the global economy and enhance their effectiveness in the workplace. These employability skills include: self-management, team working, business and customer awareness, problem-solving, communication, basic literacy and numeracy, a positive attitude to work and the use of IT.

To ensure you move forward with the right skills, our course covers both the practical and employability skills to keep you moving in the right direction.

* If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first Level 3 course then that course may be free. Please contact us for more details. If you are aged 19 or over and either studying a second Level 3 course or qualifying Level 4, 5 or 6 course you may be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the costs.

  • Quality control management in construction.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum GCSE grade 4 in both English language/Literacy and Maths - Science is desirable but not essential.
  • For continuing learners, a relevant Level 2 in a craft occupation plus grade 4 in English Language or maths.

If you are a young person who is not currently studying a traditional GCSE programme, we will consider alternative qualifications such as functional skills and vocational qualifications.

Study programmes - essential skills for employment

As an entry requirement on some of our courses, you will need a GCSE in both English and maths with at least a grade 4/C (please see entry requirements above).

If this isn’t displayed under the entry requirements and you don’t currently have a GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4/C or above before joining us, you will then study English and maths as part of your programme with the aim of achieving a qualification with at least a grade 4/C. This is to help improve your chances of employment once you leave us.

In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, all students aged 19 and under and studying a full-time course with us will take part in our study programmes.

2 years.

  • Creation of design documents.

What does the course lead to?

Careers are often pursued in a wide range of professions within construction, such as architectural technology, project management, civil engineer, planning, infrastruture and rail engineer.
