Diploma in Plastering - Level 1
Overview
This course is ideal for those who wish to work as a plasterer in the construction sector. It allows you the opportunity to progress onto the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Plastering and on to future employment within the industry.
Plastering is one of the traditional trades both in the UK and around the world. This qualification is aimed at those wishing to learn the basic skills of Plastering in order to progress and become skilled in their chosen trade and / or to progress onto an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman.
The course has been designed to help you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in plastering.
The course covers the following skills:
- Preparing backgrounds, surfaces and plastering materials.
- Applying scratch coats
- Fixing sheet materials
- Applying floating coats
- Applying setting coats
Students will participate in wider learner activities as well as work placements. They will also have the opportunity to enter competitions and interact with guest speakers. Each of these opportunities are designed to allow students to showcase their developing skills, improve interpersonal skills and gain valuable insight into the construction sector.

Entry requirements
- You must have a grade 3 (D) or above in maths and English.
- The Entry Level Diploma in Basic Construction Skills.
- Consideration will be given to 19+ learners who may not have formal qualifications but industry experience.
Mature students who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.
- 19+ year olds: You will need to supply a written reference either from a recent education institution or employer. This will need to be uploaded to your myVISION account by the end of May. If you are not able to gain a reference, please contact admissions@wnc.ac.uk for further advice.

How long is the course?
One year.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be carried out in both the classroom (theory based units) via written assessments/presentations and the workshop (practical based units) via synoptic assessments of practical work using suitable industry standard tools and materials.
What does the course lead to?
The primary aim of this qualification is to help you prepare for progression into further learning and training in the Construction & Building Services Directorate at Vision West Nottinghamshire College.
What will I study?

- Applying scratch coats to internal backgrounds
- Fixing sheet materials
- Applying float coats to wall
- Applying setting coats to wall
- Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
- English and maths
Study programmes
It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
