T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction - Level 3
Overview
T Levels are a new type of qualification that combines academic studies with a mandatory 45-day industry placement, giving you the chance to learn new skills before putting them into practice.
Equivalent to studying three A Levels, the two-year course will give you a head start into your chosen industry.
80% of your time will be spent in the classroom.
20% will be on placement getting that real on-the-job experience.
Across the two years, you will cover both core and specialist units. The core units will develop your general understanding of your chosen industry. The specialist units will cover more in-depth topics niche to your chosen specialism (pathway) and career.
On the Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level, you can chose between two pathways:
- Surveying and Design for Construction and The Built Environment
- Building Services Design.
Surveying and Design for Construction and The Built Environment
This pathway teaches the skills and knowledge to create conceptual designs and to understand how to structure a building. From designing the shape and style of the building, to picking the materials used, you will the learn everything you need to know about surveying and designing different types of building.
Based on these skills, this pathway is ideal for anyone interested in becoming an architect, construction project manager, quantity surveyor, land surveyor, sustainability engineer, Building Information Management (BIM) engineering, estimator, Health and Safety officer and similar roles.
Building Services Design
Focusing on the key services require within a building, this pathway teaches the skills and knowledge needed to design, install and maintain services such as water, gas and electrics. You will learn how to ensure building continues to function efficiently.
Learning a range of new skills, this pathway is ideal for anyone interested in becoming a building services engineering, architect technician, sustainability engineer, building services manager or similar.

Industry Placement:
Across the two-years, you will need to complete an exciting 45-day placement with a reputable employer. Throughout the summer and your first term, a dedicated work placement advisor is available to support you with building links with suitable employers so you can secure your placement.
This is a great opportunity that will not only give you experience in an external business, but enhance your technical skills and create relationships that could result in an apprenticeship or employment.
Entry requirements
This course is only available to 16-18 year olds
- Grade 4 in English and maths, plus three other GCSEs at grade 4.
- Or, successful completion of the Level 2 Construction Crafts or Building Services transition programmes.
