Roots - Level 1
Overview
Roots is designed to help young people who have barriers to engaging in a typical classroom environment prepare for being more independent in the future, being in employment, or progressing on to a higher level of study.
This course is a split balance of outdoor activities in the woodland and classroom activities to cover the development of core skills and knowledge. Students will also study English and maths to develop much-needed skills for progression.
Youth work and welfare support staff will be available as a bespoke part of the course to support any barriers to learning and progression.
What will I study?
You will study towards a Certificate in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills, which includes:
- Teamwork skills
- Community project
- Preparing for the world of work
- Experiencing the world of work
- Presentation skills
- Planning for personal development.
Entry requirements
- GCSE English and maths below grade 2.
How long is the course?
One year.
How will I be assessed?
Portfolio and exams for English and maths.

- Step-up and Progress courses
- Level 1 vocational courses
- Apprenticeships.
