Maths A Level - Level 3

Overview

A Level Mathematics builds on and extends GCSE knowledge and skills and introduces new ideas, such as calculus and its applications.

It emphasises how mathematical ideas are interconnected and how these ideas can be applied to model situations mathematically.

There is a strong emphasis on logical reasoning and problem-solving and you will learn to use your mathematical skills and techniques to solve challenging problems.

What will I study?

The course will be split into pure and applied mathematics and all content is compulsory.

In A Level there is an emphasis on pure mathematics; topics such as proof, algebra, trigonometry, series, logarithms and calculus account for approximately two thirds of the course. 

The Applied section will assess knowledge of both statistics and mechanics. In statistics you will study topics such as handling and interpreting large sets of data, probability, distributions and hypothesis testing.

In mechanics, which is closely linked to physics, you will also study forces and moments.


Entry requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including:

  • English Language (Grade 4)
  • Maths (Grade 6)
  • Plus, three other GCSEs at grade 4

Following your application you will normally be offered a place subject to achieving the entry requirements and attending a welcome taster.


Study programmes - essential skills for employment

If you're a student between the ages of 16 and 18 (or 19 to 25 with an EHC Plan) we want to make sure you have the best possible chances of landing an awesome job once you finish college.

Students who haven't achieved a grade 4/C in GCSE maths or English to continue studying these subjects while you're here with us. By doing so, you'll be building a strong foundation of skills that will significantly boost your employability in the future.

Think of it as a chance to supercharge your knowledge and abilities. You'll be equipped with the tools necessary to tackle the world beyond college with confidence. Plus, we'll be right here to support you every step of the way.

In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, all students aged 19 and under and studying a full-time course with us will take part in our study programmes.


How long is the course?

2 years.


How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed solely by examination, with exams scheduled for May/June at the end of the second year.


What does the course lead to?

Careers are often pursued as a financial advisor, chartered accountant, finance officer, investment analyst and more.


What can I progress onto?

Further study at university-level* such as maths, business, accountancy, science, computing, engineering or economics.
