Fitness Instructing CYQ - Level 2

Overview

This is the ideal fitness instructor training course to enable you to embark on a career as a gym instructor.

This nationally-recognised qualification is a basic requirement for you to be able to gain employment within the gym environment.

It provides core knowledge and key skills required to teach resistance, free weights and cardiovascular training programmes. 

Entry requirements

Anyone over the age of 16 can apply for this course. It is strongly advised that you have experience of using a gym. 

How long is the course?

One day per week for 10 weeks study plus an assessment at the end.

Location

How will I be assessed?

There will be a practical assessment and observation as well as an external test on anatomy and physiology.

What does the course lead to?

Employment within a gym, health club or leisure centre.

What will I study?

You will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the following broad areas:

  • Exercise and fitness knowledge, covering bones and joints, muscles and muscle actions, energy systems, cardiorespiratory system, components of fitness and principles of training.
  • How to plan a safe and effective gym-based session.
  • How to instruct a safe and effective gym-based session.
  • How evaluate a safe and effective gym-based session.

You will also focus on the gym instructor's role as a guide for clients in the use of equipment, and as a motivator for them to improve their fitness and achieve their goals.

Once qualified you can work towards achieving further qualifications that can lead to a career as a personal trainer.
