Fast Track Functional Skills - English and Maths (Free)

Overview

This FREE fast-track course is designed to quickly develop your English and Maths skills and boost your employability in just under four weeks. Perfect for anyone looking to build confidence and essential skills for everyday life, this course helps you progress through Functional Skills levels and can lead to a nationally recognised qualification such as GCSE English or GCSE Maths.

You will either study online or on-site at various locations across Nottinghamshire. This is your chance to learn English and maths in small groups in a discreet and supportive environment.

What will I study?

Functional Skills English qualifications indicate that you should be able to speak, listen, communicate, read and write with increasing clarity, accuracy and effectiveness at each level. You will be supported to be able to:

  • listen, understand and respond to verbal communication in a range of familiar contexts
  • acquire an understanding of everyday words and their uses and effects, and apply this understanding in different contexts
  • read with accuracy straightforward texts encountered in everyday life and work, and develop confidence to read more widely
  • write straightforward texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Functional Skills maths qualifications will enable you to:

  • become confident in your use of fundamental maths knowledge and skills, as described through the content
  • indicate that you can demonstrate your understanding by applying your knowledge and skills to solve simple maths problems or carry out simple tasks.
  • confidently use maths in everyday situations such as understanding if a promotional offer is an offer (e.g. buy one get one free).

Entry requirements

You will undertake an initial assessment to determine what level you are currently working at and what level of course is right for you.


How long is the course?

Four weeks.

Attendance will be 9am-3.30pm over 17 consecutive weekdays.

  • English – 9am-12pm
  • Lunch – 12pm-12.30pm
  • Maths – 12.30-3.30pm.

How will I be assessed?

  • English and Maths at Entry Level 1-3 will have paper-based assessments at the end of the programmes, with an additional speaking and listening assessment taken partway through the English course. 
  • English and Maths at Level 1 and Level 2 will have either paper-based or on screen tests (whichever is preferred by the learner), with an additional speaking and listening assessment taken partway through the English course.
