Diploma in Barbering - Level 2


This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing/barbering, and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber/men's stylist.

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, provide a range of cutting and barbering services specifically for men's hair, and create basic shapes in hair. They will be able to understand the workings and maintenance of clippers.

In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem-solving and research skills will also be developed.

Entry requirements

GCSE English language with at least grade 4/C or equivalent plus a dexterity test, attendance to a one-day 'welcome day' during July and August, or attendance to summer school if a progressing learner.

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

How long is the course?

36 weeks.


How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via a mix of externally set, internally graded practical assessments, as well as externally marked exams, and externally set, internally graded synoptic assessment.

What does the course lead to?

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a state registered barber (SRB) with The Hairdressing Council. 

What will I study?

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
  • Clipper maintenance
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Cut men's hair using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men's hair
  • Hair tonics
  • Health, safety and hygiene
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
