Sophie Rack, from Mansfield, entered an online competition to design a spaceship which could be featured in a new sci-fi film called Space Command.

While studying the HND in Interactive Media, twenty-one-year-old Sophie used her skills to create the craft using LightWave 3D, which is a computer graphics software package used in film, television and video games.

Last week, Sophie discovered through an online video presented by the film’s writer Marc Scott Zicree, that her design had earned her a prize in the top five. Marc has written for virtually every major US network and studio with credits for his work in Star Trek – The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5.

Sophie said: “The competition had several different challenges and I chose to create a spaceship with no limitations based around the Space Command theme. I picked this because I wanted to be creative and design something of my own concept.

“The concept and general idea of the design took about three weeks and the final design took around six weeks to create, texture and light the model.”

Sophie’s prize is a package of state-of-the-art media software called Chronosculpt and NevronMotion which will help her to further develop her creative skills further before embarking on the BA (Hons) Computer Games Modelling and Animation degree at the University of Derby.

Sophie’s tutor at West Notts, Anthony Hall, said: “Right from studying the NVQ Level 3 in Interactive Media, Sophie’s passion for creativity has shone through.

“Her 3D modelling techniques really stood out and we’re very proud that her designs for Space Command were highly commended, as the competition attracted a lot of interest from around the world.”
