What is the Spice Kitchen course?
The Spice Kitchen course at West Notts College is a practical adult evening course that helps you discover how herbs and spices can transform everyday cooking. Through hands-on cooking activities, tasting sessions and tutor demonstrations, you'll learn how to create flavourful, healthy meals with confidence.
Ideal for beginners, this course focuses on simple techniques that make home cooking more enjoyable while helping you reduce your reliance on salt, sugar and processed ingredients.
Following the course, you can progress onto our Fakeaways course to continue expanding your cooking skills.
Who should study the Spice Kitchen course?
This course is suitable for adults aged 19 and over who:
- Want to become more confident cooking with herbs and spices
- Enjoy trying new flavours and cuisines
- Would like to prepare healthier meals
- Want to improve their cooking confidence
- Are looking for a friendly adult learning environment.
No previous cooking experience is required.
What will you learn on the Spice Kitchen course?
Throughout the course you'll learn how to:
- Use herbs and spices to add flavour naturally
- Taste and identify different seasonings
- Balance flavours with confidence
- Reduce salt and sugar in everyday cooking
- Prepare healthy, flavour-packed meals
- Develop practical cooking skills through demonstrations and hands-on activities.
When does the Spice Kitchen course start?
- Monday 4 January to Monday 22 March 2027 (11 weeks)
When do classes take place?
Classes take place:
- Mondays, 5.30pm to 8.30pm
How much does the Spice Kitchen course cost?
- FREE for eligible new learners*
- £7.50 per session for returning learners on a low income*
- £15 per session for returning learners on a higher income*

How is the Spice Kitchen course delivered?
The course is taught through practical evening classes at West Notts College's Derby Road campus in Mansfield. You'll learn through cooking demonstrations, tasting sessions, practical activities and tutor guidance in a supportive adult-only environment.
