Future-proof your goals with a smart backup plan
Apprenticeships are a fantastic option after leaving school, but since they’re just like applying for a job, there’s no guarantee you’ll be selected. This year, there are even fewer apprenticeship vacancies, making competition tougher than ever.
That’s why we encourage you to keep your options open. Just like applying for multiple jobs, having a backup plan puts YOU in control. Applying for a college course alongside your apprenticeship applications gives you more choices and peace of mind.
Many students who apply for both feel less stressed about their future - so why not do the same?
College places are filling up fast! Don’t wait - secure your backup plan and apply for a college course today.
Top tips for a backup plan
Apply for multiple options
Don’t just rely on an apprenticeship or sixth form application - apply to at least one college course too! This way, you won’t be stuck in September if your first choice falls through.
Research different pathways to your chosen career
Look at college courses such as T-Levels, BTECs, and alternative qualifications. Many will lead to the same career goal as an apprenticeship!
Check entry requirements
Make sure you meet the entry requirements for each option. If you don’t, ensure you know what backup courses or alternative entry routes are available to you.
Keep track of deadlines
Apprenticeship, sixth form, and colleges all have application deadlines – so don’t miss out! Places fill up fast, so apply early so you have choices when it’s time to decide.
Stay open-minded
If an apprenticeship doesn’t work out, that’s okay! Many students end up happier with their backup choice. Every pathway leads to opportunities - you just need to take the first step!
