National Careers Week 2019

The college’s careers and employability team have put together some great tips to help you this National Careers Week.

The team is available for both students and the general public for careers advice and guidance or visit the Job Shop to check out vacancies in the area.

Refining your job search

  • Explore your interests and research career opportunities through a mix of specialist websites, networking and volunteering.
  • Consider agencies, word of mouth, and websites with vacancy and training information.
  • The college careers team website has additional information on all aspects of education and employment.

CV writing

Do

  • Adapt your CV to suit the vacancy you wish to apply for.
  • Make it easy to read and no more than two A4 pages.
  • Highlight the qualities and relevant skills and experience you have developed.

Don't

  • Put your date of birth.
  • Handwrite a CV.
  • Miss any spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Be dishonest or have gaps in employment history.
  • Use jargon.

Coping in interviews

Do

  • Research the company to see what type of business they are.
  • Check how long they have been established, what their key achievements are and who their customers are.
  • Be organised and rehearse questions and answers beforehand.
  • Plan your appearance, think positive, engage and maintain eye contact.
  • Be enthusiastic, answer questions confidently, clearly and honestly and give relevant examples for your experience.

Don't

  • Arrive late.
  • Ask about pay, holidays and perks. These can be discussed if you are offered the job.
  • Joke, swear or be over familiar with the interviewer.
  • Interrupt the interviewer.

Dealing with disappointment

Why not telephone and ask the employer for feedback on the interview? Then use this feedback to constructively recognise what went well and work on any areas for development which the employer highlights.
