Painting and Decorating Technical Certificate - Level 2

Overview

This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Painting and Decorating is aimed at you if you are looking to work in the construction industry specifically as a craftsperson in painting and decorating. A painter and decorator has the skills and knowledge to use a range of coverings such as paint and wallpaper to enhance and protect surfaces such as plaster, metal and wood, and plays an important part of any construction team.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of at least grade 4/C in English and maths.
  • A relevant foundation construction award or a Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating, including English and maths.
  • If the applicant has trade experience, a basic aptitude test will be required.

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

How long is the course?

One year.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by:

  • Practical assessment
  • Theory test
  • Online test
  • Health and safety test.

What does the course lead to?

On successful completion, you could choose to progress to the Level 3 Construction Diploma (normally after gaining relevant employment) or upgrade the Diploma to the NVQ Level 2 with additional work-based evidence.

What will I study?

This qualification covers all the main skills and knowledge you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work as a painter and decorator.

You will study the following mandatory content:

  • Principles of construction
  • Access equipment
  • Preparation of surfaces for decoration
  • Application of surface coatings
  • Application of papers to walls and ceilings
  • Producing decorative colour effects

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
