NCFE CACHE Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner - Level 2


On this course you can expect to develop the skills, knowledge, personal qualities and attributes for a range of careers supporting the care and education of young children. This is a nationally recognised qualification that meets the needs of employers when they are seeking to recruit staff within the Early Years and Primary School settings.

You will also undertake training placements in childcare and education settings each week.

Entry requirements

  • This course is only available to those aged 16-18 years
  • Four GCSEs with at least grade 3/D including maths and preferably GCSE English with grade 4/C; OR
  • A Level 1 NCFE CACHE Diploma in Caring for Children, or a Level 1 Diploma in Health and Social Care (with appropriate English and maths skills). 
  • You will be required to undertake a DBS check that the college will fund prior to any placement. Any reprimands, cautions, warnings, convictions or ASBOs may affect your chances of securing a work placement

You will need to supply at least one written reference from your school/college teacher and a current school or college report, with an indication of your attendance pattern and achievements.

How long is the course?

One year.


How will I be assessed?

  • You'll be assessed through a professional skills record with an early years and primary school setting.
  • Written assignments and set tasks.
  • You will also undertake a synoptic short annswer examination paper.

What does the course lead to?

Upon successful completion you could decide to pursue a career in a childcare setting as an early years worker, teaching assistant in a primary school setting, children's holiday representative in England and abroad as well as a range of other careers with children. You could also progress to the NCFE CACHE Technical Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) - Licence to Practice - Level 3.

What will I study?

The course content will cover:

  • The knowledge and skills required to support children's care and development
  • Supporting children's play in the early years
  • Supporting children's positive behaviour
  • The health and safety of children
  • Supporting children in a primary school setting.

Study programmes - essential skills for employment

As an entry requirement on some of our courses, you will need a GCSE in both English and maths with at least a grade 4/C (please see entry requirements above).

If this isn’t displayed under the entry requirements and you don’t currently have a GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4/C or above before joining us, you will then study English and maths as part of your programme with the aim of achieving a qualification with at least a grade 4/C. This is to help improve your chances of employment once you leave us.

In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, all students aged 19 and under and studying a full-time course with us will take part in our study programmes.
