Foundation Degree Arts Children and Young People 0-25 (Pathway)

We are delighted to offer you the opportunity to be one of the first to apply for our new FdA Children and Young People 0-25 (Pathway) course commencing in September 2019 for Full time applicants and January 2020 for Part Time applicants. This course is built on our highly successful FdA Children’s and Young People’s Services programme and offers the following pathway choice:  

Pathway Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) - For applicants that have a full L3 qualification and 2 days employed or on placement that support children and/or young people with special education needs and disabilities.   

Overview

The demand for highly-qualified practitioners to work with children, young people and their families is rapidly increasing. This Foundation Degree Arts Children and Young People 0-25 has been developed with sector employers and designed to help you meet this need.  

Academic study will be directly related to your working environment so, whichever Pathway you choose, this course will enable you to become a confident, knowledgeable and effective practitioner.  

The course is regulated by Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and delivered in partnership with the University of Derby.  As a University of Derby partner student, you will have access to the university’s virtual learning environment, including UDo and on-line journals and texts, as well as to their library facilities.

Please note that the FdA Children and Young People’s Services course in your 2019/2020 prospectus has now been replaced by FdA Children and Young People 0-25. If you have already submitted an application for the former course but, in light of the above information, would like to change pathway, please contact the college on 01623 627191.

The qualification is awarded by the University of Derby.

Entry requirements

Full- and part-time applicants must be aged 18 or over and working directly with children or young people aged 0-25 years in a voluntary or paid capacity for a minimum of 2 days a week.

To enrol on this course you will need to provide certificates for qualifications:  

  • A full Level 3 Diploma or at least 80 UCAS points at A Level in appropriate subjects.

  • GCSE English Grade *A – C (4 and above)

  • Evidence of successful self-funded Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. We recommend that you consider registering with the DBS update service.

(Qualification equivalences may be considered for part-time applicants who are currently employed within the sector.)

Start dates and fees

Full-time - £7000 per year (2 years)

The full-time programme will run on Wednesdays and Thursdays (term-time only) commencing with mandatory enrolment and induction on Wednesday 11 September 2019.  

Placement will be on Mondays and Tuesdays (term-time only).

You will need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to reading and research outside of the classroom so Fridays are for independent study. 

Part-time - £3610.00 per year (3 years)

The part-time course will run on Tuesday evenings from 4.30 – 8.30 p.m. beginning 7 January 2020.

Enrolment and Induction dates and times are to be confirmed. You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to ready and research outside of the classroom.

How long is the course?

This programme lasts for two years full-time and three years part-time. You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and work outside of the classroom.

Full-time students will have two days in college, a study day and two work placement days per week. Part-time students will attend one twilight session per week and be employed for at least two full days within the sector or equivalent.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and include for example, written reports, presentations, case studies, essays and reflections.  Modules are sector-related and assessment will relate to your own organisation or vocational setting.

What does the course lead to?

The course leads to employment and volunteering opportunities with children and young people age 0-25 years in a wide range of jobs and professional occupations. For example:

  • Early years and childcare settings

  • Primary, secondary and alternative provision schools

  • Special education needs and disabilities provision

What will I study?

The course consists of 12 modules:

  • Higher Education Study Skills

  • Ethical Practice, Attitudes and Values

  • Work-Based Reflective Practice

  • Integrated Services

  • Children Playing/Children and Young People Communicating

  • Early Years Provision and Practice (EY pathway) or Supporting Teaching and Learning (TA pathway) or Introduction to SEND (SEND pathway).

  • Children and Young People's Health and Well-Being (EY and TA pathway) or Supporting Learner with SEND (SEND pathway)

  • Understanding Behaviour

  • International Perspectives in Provision – Working with Children and Young People

  • Children, Young People’s and Family Rights

  • Research Methods and Practice

  • Secondary Research

What else can I do?

Foundation Degree Arts Children and Young People - Pathway Teaching Assistant (TA) - For applicants that have a full L3 qualification and 2 days employed or on placement in a school setting.

Or

Foundation Degree Arts Children and Young People - Pathway Early Years (EY) - For applicants that have a full L3 qualification and 2 days employed or on placement in an early years settings.  

Or

Foundation Degree Arts Children and Young People - Pathway Early Years with Practitioner Status – For applicants would like to work with children aged 0-5, have 80 UCAS points from ‘A’ levels or similar, and do not hold a relevant L3 Early Years qualification.

What can I go on to study?

On successful completion of the foundation degree, progression to further study includes, for example:  

  • BA (Hons) Education Studies (top-up) (available at Vision University Centre)

  • BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies at the University of Derby

  • BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies at the University of Derby

  • BA (Hons) Special Educational Needs and Disability at the University of Derby 

  • Other relevant programmes of your choice.

FdA is a route into teaching within Early Years and Primary education as well as a plethora of other professions that involve working with children and young people. All progression routes are be subject to their own entry requirements.
