  The sky’s the limit for travel and tourism students’ skills, following the launch of a new interactive classroom at West Nottinghamshire College.

  My overall journey at college and on the course has been eventful and inspiring as the tutors offer many opportunities to help and to get the most out of the course – Darcy.

  Lessons are very enjoyable! One of my favourite units was long haul flights as I enjoyed learning about the different time zones and areas of the world especially as I have a huge interest in countries like Japan and South Korea - Emily Kimberley.

  

  My favourite and most memorable experience was 100% when we got to visit The Gambia in Africa, where we visited schools, local villages, beautiful beaches and a monkey reserve. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity! – Jessica Darwood-Brown.

  

  I’ve been on trips to East Midlands Airport and Alton Towers during this course. The East Midlands Airport trip opened an amazing opportunity for me where I did a week’s placement at the airport which was such a good experience and great for my CV – Katie.

  FAQs - travel and tourism courses

  The following information will hopefully give you a little bit more of an insight into what it will be like to be a student with us.

  • Where will I study?

    All of our travel and tourism courses are based at our Derby Road site, Mansfield. Travel and tourism have dedicated classrooms for teaching and role-play areas to simulate what it is like to work in the industry, including a mock aircraft cabin and travel agency.

  • What is it like?

    The college is an adult, professional environment intended to prepare you to work in your chosen industry. We expect our students to behave in the way that they would in a job with an employer. Professional standards, such as attendance and punctuality, are very important. You also need to enjoy working with people, as the course will work on developing your interpersonal skills to be able to offer excellent customer service. All staff members have a great deal of experience and contacts within the industry, which will help enhance your experience.

  • What will I study?

    On-campus study is mainly classroom-based, complemented by some new practical work suites where you turn classroom learning into practice. This includes a mock airplane cabin. All courses combine a mix of theory and practical learning, with each unit including a practical project-based assessment which allows you to display the skills you would use in industry to help prepare you for future employment. The higher the level of programme, the more theory-based work you will be expected to do.

  • What about English and maths?

    If you start at college and you haven’t yet achieved your English and maths GCSEs at grade 4 or above, then you will continue to study these for three hours each week per subject. At the end of your first year you will take a re-sit GCSE exam. It is important you attend your English and maths lessons alongside your chosen course.

  • What will I have to wear?

    Students in travel and tourism will be expected to wear uniform in much the same way that you would in industry. This comprises a white shirt/blouse or plain polo shirt, black skirt or trousers and black shoes suitable to a professional environment. You will also purchase a coloured neck scarf or tie when you start college. As you are training to work in a customer-facing role, high levels of personal presentation will be required.

  • Will I have to do a work placement?

    At levels 2 and 3 you will be expected to spend some time on a formal work placement with an employer that focuses on developing customer service skills. This is a great way for you to get your foot in the door, impress an employer and potentially move into a job or apprenticeship as a result. The central work placement team will help you source a work placement opportunity.

    All of our students will be able to also get engaged with our learning companies, which provide in-house opportunities to gain real-world experience. This year students are involved with the Mansfield Heritage Project, offering guided tours of the local area, and a holiday enquiry service that helps staff members at college find their ideal holiday.
