Recognising cultural history and diversity

Posted: 21 October 2021

Students and staff from West Nottinghamshire College have been celebrating Black History Month, through a range of multicultural experience events which took place at each campus throughout the week.

People were able to learn how the Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Other (BAME+) community has shaped our country and could listen to talks on Black history. The range of cultural food and drinks on the roadshows enabled people to meet new faces, while sampling some different types of cuisine.

Attendance coaches Jay Ylanan and Wayne Golding provided information about the college’s BAME+ community which enables staff and students from ethnic minorities to share common interests through regular organised activities which have been tailored to improve the college experience of those students who are in our demographic.

A-level students at the Mansfield and Ashfield Sixth Form Centre booked on to Black History Month themed tutorials to widen their knowledge on this important annual event.

Attendance coach Wayne Golding said: “It was really good to meet and speak to individuals who came along to the roadshows. One student even asked why we don’t learn more about black history in education as it is very interesting and important – so this is something to consider further.

“It was great to see the diversity of students who took part in the event over the three days as well.”
