Posted: 11 March 2020

Discovering how babies are delivered on board a plane and dealing with conflict and emergency evacuations on a flight were just some of the topics discussed with travel and tourism students at West Nottinghamshire College.

Representatives from Jet2.com were on hand to deliver careers advice and guidance last week at a special recruitment day, aimed at getting Level 2 and 3 Travel and Tourism Diploma students work-ready and confident for applying for jobs and attending interviews next year.

Jet2 brand champion Amanda Kay, together with colleague and back of house tutor manager Michelle Parker, delivered a session to learners at the Derby Road campus, focussing on CV writing and assessments as well as highlighting the broad range of job roles available within the airline company and how to apply for them.

Student Amy Salmon, 19, said: “It was really interesting to hear just how many different jobs and career pathways there are at an airport – so much more than just cabin crew staff. Amanda and Michelle gave us some great advice about how to best apply for certain roles and how to tailor our CVs accordingly.

“We were shown a video about cabin crew training as well and discovered that staff have to be prepared for so many different things such as dealing with passengers falling ill with heart attacks and needing to know CPR as well as people giving birth mid-flight! Cabin crew have to have so many different skills.”

Amanda Kay said: “We looked at how to prepare the best CV, keeping everything to two sides of paper, concentrating on getting all of your competencies and capabilities listed appropriately.

“We also wanted to show the students just how varied the jobs are at Jet2.com. Michelle’s own job role deals with so many ‘back of house’ operations such as baggage, dealing with planes going out, rostering staff, HR and audits – which many people wouldn’t realise exist.

“We hope that the students feel confident to apply for roles which they have an interest in, ready for when they’ve completed their studies.”
