Students are made up with professional make-up tutorial

Posted: 26 September 2019

The very latest make-up trends and colours were presented to students at West Nottinghamshire College yesterday (25 September), by MAC make-up artists.

Kelsay Higton and Liz McCarthy from the MAC counter at Nottingham’s John Lewis store spent a day at the college showing the Level 2 Media Make-up students some tricks of the trade as well as giving them an insight into the industry.

Sixteen-year-old student Alyssa Miller was the willing model and was given a bright and bold look while students learnt about how to create the look using the right brushes.

Kelsay and Liz taught the students how to create the popular ‘cut crease’ eye. This is a style of eyeshadow that involves darkening the crease of the eyelid to create a dramatic, smoky effect.

The group also learnt about applying the right shade of foundation and colour for different skin tones, how to create the dramatic brow and how to master the art of highlighting and contouring the face.

Tutor Claire Guy said: “Working with the MAC ladies has most definitely inspired our students to be more creative with colour in their practical work and to be braver with more daring looks.

“They’re really looking forward to emulating this look in our Friday workshop so they can add this to their portfolio.”

Student model Alyssa Miller said: “It was really good to have someone do the make-up for me. I learnt lots from Kelsay as she was applying it, so I can try things myself now. I wouldn’t normally wear such a bold eye colour but it was fun to see it.

“Career wise I’d like to be a freelance make-up artist or go to university and eventually work on make-up skills in film and television.”

Students were able to ask Kelsay and Liz questions about specialist make-up and careers in the industry before having the chance to purchase a range of discounted MAC products.
