Safety is paramount at college

Taking care on the roads has been top of the list at West Nottinghamshire College during this week’s national Road Safety Week (20-26 November).

This annual campaign, which is co-ordinated by road safety charity, Brake, gave the college the opportunity to remind students how to boost their awareness on the roads.
Throughout the week, engineering staff and students from the Engineering Innovation Centre volunteered their time and skills to offer free car safety checks at each of the college campuses.
Entry-level Diploma for the Introduction to Vehicle Technology student, Braidy Ward, 16, said: “We’ve had a number of bookings from people who want their cars safety checking. We’ve been looking at things like brake lights, tyre pressure, brake fluid and water.”
Motor vehicle tutor Dave Rymell said: “It’s a good health check to have on your vehicle, especially in winter months. The students have run the checks by themselves while I supervised the activity.
“They’ve prepared all the tools themselves and practiced well before working on the cars. Any fluids that need topping up in the cars, the students have sorted and they’ve been giving recommendations on other minor things they’ve spotted on cars.”
One of the UK’s largest bike hire operators, British Bike Hire, also visited the college campuses to provide push-bike servicing.
Staff from the Mansfield-based company provided a free MOT safety check, ensuring the basic functionality of bikes were in correct working order, while the student experience team provided online daily tips and advice to students about staying safe on the roads and how to avoid unnecessary accidents.
