Applicant day saw hundreds of students-to-be join staff and external companies for a taste of things to come in the new college year.
During the morning, groups were welcomed to their planned course area, giving them the opportunity to meet with their tutors and future classmates and get involved in a variety of ‘taster’ events designed to introduce them to their forthcoming studies.
Prospective animal care students met a selection of animals brought in by White Post Farm staff. This provided them with a hands-on session where they could handle animals such as a dog, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds and rabbits.
During the afternoon, there were fun activities staged for the newcomers to socialise and make new friends as well as find out about the many things students can get involved in at college, including joining the Students’ Union, becoming part a volunteering project or enrolling with the National Citizen Service.
Games included indoor laser quest, basketball shoots, pedalling the smoothie bike, mini beauty treatments and henna tattoo were available, as well badminton, FIFA online games, a pizza van during lunch break and a creative crafting area.
Lauren Purdy, who will be studying animal care, said “I’m glad I came today. I’ve been able to see some animals and have a look round all the classrooms. I’ve found that the people here are really friendly and it’s given me a bit more confidence before I start next term.”
Amber Melling, 16, said: “I’ve learnt a lot more about the college experience today. I feel like I have more knowledge about what’s going to happen once I start in September. I’ll be studying A Levels in biology, chemistry and psychology and I can’t wait.”
Libby Brown, who will be studying a diploma in art, came to the event on her own but left with a new set of friends who she met on the day.
She said: “If I just came fresh to college in September I wouldn’t know anyone and would feel like a little intimidated person in the corner. But to come today and meet all these new people is just wonderful. I’ve met these three girls, Aasiya, Rebecca and Maria today and can’t wait to see them again in the new term.”
Learner conversion co-ordinator Nathan Adams said: “I’m delighted with the outcome of the day, seeing future learners arrive on their own and leaving in groups of new friends was fantastic to see. This event shows off the college for being a fun, vibrant place, full of great people and staff.
“We hope that today’s activities have both reassured and boosted the confidence of students due to enrol with us in September.”
