Musical theatre is a class act

Performing arts students at West Nottinghamshire College took to the stage at Mansfield’s Palace Theatre last week with their thought-provoking act.
Pyjama clad musical theatre students put on a glowing performance
‘Carelessness Causes Fire’ was the title of their ensemble contemporary dance piece, choreographed by their programme leader Simon Watt on Friday (20 February). It was based on bedtime prayers and stories that influence dreams and featured pyjamas as their stage costume.
They were one of 17 acts selected by a panel of judges to take part in the annual presentation of the County Youth Arts Showcase, which is run by Nottinghamshire County Council. The showcase invites people aged 13 to 19 to take part in a creative performance such as dancing, acting, singing or reading poetry.
The group of eight students, who are currently studying on the Performing Arts BTEC Extended Diploma in Musical Theatre, presented alongside other dance and drama acts in the heats which were held before Christmas.
Programme area leader Simon Watt said: “The students’ performance went down a storm at the Palace Theatre. I was very impressed with how they pulled together as a team to perform so well at such a large scale event.
“Some of these people have never danced before they joined the college programme so to see them putting such energy and enthusiasm into the piece made me proud.”
