Introduction to Animal Care (Beginner) - Level 1
Overview
This course is ideal for learners who are starting out in the animal care sector.
As well as studying a range of skills related to the care and welfare of animals, it will build your self-confidence and improve on your personal and social development skills.
Providing the opportunity to work with a wide-range of animals, this course will teach you the key skills needed to work with animals of all shapes and sizes. Our exclusive partnership with White Post Farm will develop your understanding of working with larger animals and the day-to-day running of a farm or animal business. On-site, you will have the responsibility of caring for small mammals and reptiles, including taking part in our Learning Company which provided puppy training to the local community.

What will I study?
- Safe and effective working practices in the land-based industry
- Assist with maintaining the health and well-being of animals
- Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals
- Assist with feeding, watering and exercising of animals
- Assertiveness and decision making skills
- Searching and applying for a job
- Working as part of a team
- Recognising types and parts of the body of small animals
- Clean farm animal housing.
Entry requirements
- Grade 2 in maths and English, plus two additional GCSEs at grade 2.
- You will also need to complete an initial assessment.
If you are a young person who is not currently studying a traditional GCSE programme, we will consider alternative qualifications such as functional skills and vocational qualifications.

- If you do not have the entry requirements listed above you may still be accepted to study if you can provide relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject.
Study programmes - essential skills for employment
If you're a student between the ages of 16 and 18 (or 19 to 25 with an EHC Plan) we want to make sure you have the best possible chances of landing an awesome job once you finish college.
Students who haven't achieved a grade 4/C in GCSE maths or English to continue studying these subjects while you're here with us. By doing so, you'll be building a strong foundation of skills that will significantly boost your employability in the future.
Think of it as a chance to supercharge your knowledge and abilities. You'll be equipped with the tools necessary to tackle the world beyond college with confidence. Plus, we'll be right here to support you every step of the way.
In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, all students aged 19 and under and studying a full-time course with us will take part in our study programmes.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on your portfolio work and through practical assessment.
What does the course lead to?
Upon completion you could gain employment in a role related to the skills and knowledge you develop on the course.
