Both your subject tutors and specialist support staff will provide you with on-going support and guidance, including comprehensive help with the development of study skills essential for success at Higher Education level.

Our HE team, based at Derby Road, are always on-hand to offer advice and guidance and can help you access the practical support available. Once you have joined the course, to help you make the most of your learning and achieve your goals, you will have a personal tutor who will arrange tutorials with you to discuss your progress and any concerns you may have.

Study support

Studying at university level requires a range of academic study skills that many students are unsure of. More often than not, Higher Education students are left to teach themselves the essential skills that they need to progress and achieve.

At Vision West Nottinghamshire College we provide our students with training and support that will improve both their skills and confidence. As one of our HE students, you will have access to a dedicated HE study skills coach, one-to-one study support and generic study skills workshops that cover themes including research skills, referencing, critical thinking, time management, reflective reading and essay writing (held throughout the year).

Summer School

If you have just completed a Level 3 qualification (for example: A Level, City & Guilds, CACHE Diploma or a BTEC National Diploma) and feel unsure about moving on into Higher Education, or you’re an adult who is returning to study after a lengthy break, our comprehensive summer school programme will equip you with the techniques and strategies you need to progress. The summer school will really build your confidence ready for that first day in September by introducing topics such as referencing and effective reading skills. Don’t sit at your PC worrying, get in touch and find out how we can help.

Contact the HE team on 01623 627191 ext. 8092 for more information.

Support for disabled students

We have an additional learning support team who can advise and support you with issues surrounding any additional needs you may have. This may include assistance with an application for a Disabled Student Allowance (DSA). This allowance is given depending upon individual needs, enabling students who have a learning difficulty and/or disability to access their chosen course.

Support can include a range of specialist facilities such as a note taker, a learning support assistant, additional time with specialist tutors (e.g. dyslexia tutors) and items of assistive technology and software.

SKILL, the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities, offers a full range of information on funding entitlements for disabled students. For more information call freephone 0800 328 5050 or visit www.skill.org.uk
