What is Further Education?

Further Education (FE for short) is any education studied after school which is below university level. Generally FE is undertaken by 16-19 year-olds.

The versatility of FE means that whether your child chooses a pathway in the academic, vocational or apprenticeship field, their needs will be more-than-adequately catered for.

Those who successfully complete FE usually go on to university level programmes or into employment.

Why is Further Education important?

Further Education allows choice and flexibility for your child’s future. Often after leaving school, children need more time to decide in which direction their career lies. FE allows them this time as well as providing the knowledge they need to make the right decisions.

The higher the qualification, the higher the starting salary tends to be in a first job. Those able to demonstrate a higher level of learning to employers are more likely to be given higher-level jobs. And the higher up the career ladder they start, the faster they will climb.

Although your child will have learnt key skills at school, FE is important for developing these skills further as well as introducing new ones. Attending College will notably improve your child’s prospects in a job market that increasingly demands qualifications from its employees.

If your child has aspirations of university then FE is an essential step in the process. With FE qualifications, they can open doors to HNDs, foundation degrees and full honours degrees.

The college environment is also the perfect stepping stone for those who want to go away to study at university. At college your child will be given a sense of freedom and responsibility that mirrors life at university and prepares them for independent living, decision-making and studying.
