ICT AS/A Level

Overview

We believe there should be more to the A Level experience than a classroom and textbooks; your time with us will be enhanced with enrichment activities, subject-related visits and other experiences. You personal tutor will guide you through your studies and prepare you for higher education or employment. We have an independent learning centre exclusively for GCSE and A Level students with up to date resources designed specifically for our A Level courses.

Description

ICT has become an important part of our world. Individuals, businesses, schools and hospitals, all require the management and support of their ICT systems in order to function on a daily basis.

You will learn how to utilise ICT systems in the workplace, from defining the information needs of users to developing solutions for business needs.

The course will supply you with the fundamental skills to support users of ICT systems as well as handling data and understanding developments in technology.

The course is taught in a modern computer suite by experienced computer science tutors. We also have regular field trips into the world of business, including a trip to Disney Land Paris, where you will have the opportunity to look behind the scenes at ICT users working in one of the worlds most recognisable corporations.

How long is the course?

Both the AS and A2 take one year each.

How will I be assessed?

You will be formally assessed by examination for each module taken through the year as well as a coursework assignment. During the year your tutor will also set you individual and/or group work. This could be in the form of an essay, a presentation and report or mini project.

Success rates

A2 pass rate for 2011: 100%.

What will I study?

You will develop real skills in communication, team work and independence, instilling you with the ability to take your studies further. We offer a wide range of A Levels that can be combined to offer you a comprehensive study programme.

The course will supply you with the fundamental skills to support users of ICT systems as well as handling data and understanding developments in technology.

What does the course lead to?

ICT is regarded as a useful qualification to support your entrance onto any degree programme or higher education course. Courses that relate specifically to the skills acquired on the ICT A Level would include Network Engineering, Web Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Business Information Systems.

You could also opt to stay at Vision West Notts and study a Foundation Degree in Networking Technologies or Software Development (validated by Leeds Metropolitan University).

You could take your practical skills into almost any industry sector as a technical consultant, systems administrator, operations support or ICT manager to name just a few. As a certain level of computer use is expected in modern society your advanced skills would be highly desirable in many other areas of employment.

Entry requirements

You must have gained at least 5 GCSE subjects at grade C or above or have equivalent qualifications (some subjects also require you to achieve a B grade in the respective GCSE).

For subjects usually available in schools, you will normally be required to have attained the appropriate GCSE grade before being accepted onto an AS Level qualification. For subjects that are not usually available to study at GCSE level in schools (such as Law or Psychology), a good standard of English language is required.

All prospective students are interviewed so that we can ensure you are selecting the most appropriate subjects and type of study. The interview also allows you to ask any questions that you may have about college life or studying A Levels with us.
