Overview
A career in the public services can be satisfying and rewarding, as well as being stimulating and varied. The demand for graduates to enter the sector continues to grow with opportunities across a number of roles.
Description
If you are currently working or want to progress to working in a public services role, this programme will provide you with the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised, vocationally specific qualification with a work-related emphasis.
The content of the programme comprises of a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in uniformed public services such as the police force, prison service, customs and excise and the armed forces, as well as local authorities and the voluntary sector.
This programme is validated by Leeds Metropolitan University.
How long is the course?
Two years. You will normally be required to attend two days per week. You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and study outside of the classroom.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, case studies, individual/group projects and reflective statements. Where modules are work-related, assessment will relate to your own organisation (where appropriate) and/or vocational setting.

You'll study a range of core and optional modules that will include:
o Introduction to Public Services
o Social Theory and the Public Services
o Introduction to Criminology
o Legal Contexts
o Social Issues
o Community Regeneration
o Justice and Punishment
o Public Sector Ethics
o Personal and Professional Development (two
modules at each level)
o Work-Related Learning (two modules at each
level)
What does the course lead to?
This programme is aimed at those who are looking to develop themselves further in the public services sector. You can expect to progress in your current role or enhance your employability in one of the following relevant fields:

o The Police Service

o The Prison Service
o The Voluntary Sector
o Customs and Excise
o Local Government
o Public Sector Administration
What can I go on to study?
On successful completion of the programme, you may wish to complete the ‘top-up’ award to gain a full honours degree available at the college, the BA (Hons) Business and Management (validated by Leeds Metropolitan University).
Entry requirements
All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues.
To start this course, you will be expected to have successfully completed, or have evidence of working towards, a minimum of one of the following:
o Appropriate A Levels and three GCSEs at grade C or
equivalent
o NVQ Level 3 in a related subject
o Appropriate BTEC National qualifications
o Other appropriate Level 3 qualification
If you have substantial, relevant work experience rather than qualifications, we will take this into consideration at the interview. However, literacy at Level 2 is an essential requirement and numeracy at Level 2 is desirable.
