Overview

The BTEC Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2 is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of the health and social care sectors and provide opportunities to acquire transferable skills and knowledge.

Description

This course will enable you to gain a nationally-recognised, vocationally specific qualification to enter employment as a health or social care worker or progress to a level 3 qualification.

The course content aims to develop your knowledge of the role of the health or social care worker, their relationship with patients/service users and their responsibilities to service users and the wider health and social care sectors.

You will be provided with opportunities to develop your functional skills and a range of other skills, techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for a successful performance in working life.

You will be required to undertake 60 hours of mandatory work placement.

You will also be encouraged to actively participate in voluntary work.

How long is the course?

One year.

How will I be assessed?

You will be continually assessed through a portfolio and assignments which will relate to the vocational units studied.

What will I study?

The BTEC Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2 consists of two core units and four specialist units.

The core units are:

  • Communication and Individual Rights within the Health and Social Care Sectors
  • Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors

The specialist units (four of which are chosen by the tutor):

  • Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting*
  • Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care
  • Health and Social Care Services
  • The Impact of Diet on Health

*This unit includes 60 hours mandatory work experience.

What does the course lead to?

Employment in the care sector as a health care assistant, care support worker or care assistant. You may also progress onto a level three programme if you achieve the entry criteria.

What can I go on to study?

Upon completion you could progress onto the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3.

Entry requirements

A minimum of one GCSE at grade C in an academic subject, plus four GCSEs at grade D or above and a standard of literacy and numeracy appropriate to this level of study. 

Related work experience and/or other related Level 1 or 2 qualifications will also be considered; for example, the Level 1 BTEC Diploma in Health and Social Care with two units achieved at Level 2.

You must provide two good references and be successful at interview. You will be required to undertake a CRB/ISA check that you will have to fund yourself.

It is essential that you disclose any criminal convictions, reprimands or cautions at the time of application and interview as this may influence your offer of a place.
