English Literature AS/A Level

Overview

Studying A Level English Literature will encourage you to develop your interest and enjoyment in literature, gain an understanding of the traditions of literature, make informed opinions and judgements on literary texts and develop your knowledge of cultural and historical influences on text.

Description

You will be taught to critically analyse a text according to its historical and cultural period and, as well as enjoying great works, you'll develop keen powers of analysis and an understanding of literature in all its forms.

How long is the course?

Both the AS and A2 Levels take one year each.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through coursework and examinations in May and June.

Success rates

A2 pass rate for 2011: 95%

What will I study?

The texts covered will include; A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, The Great Gatsby and The World's Wife by Carol Ann Duffy. You will also be encouraged to read widely and keep a reading log.

What does the course lead to?

A Levels are a good qualification to attain for progression onto university or onto an academic career. These qualifications are also recognised and highly regarded by prospective employers.

The skills taught on this course will equip you with the knowledge necessary for a working life in; teaching, publishing, the media, social work, law and the public sector (defence, education or social security).

What can I go on to study?

This A Level can be used to progress to a Degree in History, Creative Writing, Politics, Media and Communications or Journalism.

Entry requirements

You must possess at least five GCSE grade Cs or above, one of which must be GCSE English Literature.
