Access to HE Teacher Training

Overview

Access to HE is specifically designed for adults who have been out of formal education for some time, but want to enter university-level courses.

Description

You will study a number of different modules which will be made up of mandatory and optional subjects. You will also undertake a number of core academic subjects that are designed to prepare you for the demands of higher level study. These are common to all Access pathways, with an emphasis on critical thinking, the techniques of written and spoken presentation, research skills, maths and IT.

How long is the course?

Our Access to HE courses can be studied within one academic year – up to 450 hours of classtime although some learners may be exempt from parts of the course if you already have GCSEs.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on the assignments which are set regularly throughout the course. Some of these assignments will be completed under exam conditions but most will be completed in your own time.

What will I study?

You will study:
- Communications/English (Level 3)
- Science - Biology and/or Physics and/or Chemistry (Level 2 or 3)
- Maths (Level 2 or 3)
- Practical issues in teaching (this involves a work placement)

You will also study other optional subjects which include:
- History
- Language study
- Literary study
- Psychology
- Sociology
- ICT

What does the course lead to?

This course offers a route into Teacher Training for adults who want to take a degree with Qualified Teacher Status or a PGCE after taking a degree in the chosen subject area. Courses include:

- BA (Hons) with QTS (Primary or Secondary)
- Foundation Degree (higher level) Teaching Assistant
