Overview

Access to HE is specifically designed for adults who have been out of formal education for some time, but want to enter university-level courses.

Description

You will study a number of different modules which will be made up of mandatory and optional subjects. You will also undertake a number of core academic subjects that are designed to prepare you for the demands of higher level study. These are common to all Access pathways, with an emphasis on critical thinking, the techniques of written and spoken presentation, research skills, maths and IT.

How long is the course?

Our Access to HE courses can be studied within one academic year - approximately 500 hours of classtime. You'll study full-time, which will require you to attend between 12-15 hours of class per week on various days.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on the assignments which are set regularly throughout the course. Some of these assignments will be completed under exam conditions but most will be completed in your own time.

What will I study?

You will study a range of modules, some of which are mandatory and some which are optional. These could be:

  • Communications
  • Maths (Level 2)
  • ICT
  • Individual project in business
  • Business
  • History
  • Language studies
  • Law
  • Maths (Level 3)
  • Sociology
  • Psychology

What does the course lead to?

You could progress to a wide range of business-related HE courses including:

  • Business studies
  • Economics
  • Accounting and finance
  • Marketing

Entry requirements

  • General evidence of successful study at Level 2
  • Evidence of Level 2/3 competence in English
  • Evidence of Level 2 competence in Maths
  • Certificated grade C or above in either (but preferably both) Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • Completion of the Initial Assessment task (at the college), followed by an interview with a course tutor (this may involve additional assessment tasks)
  • At interview, you may be asked to achieve more GCSEs before starting on Access, and you may be advised to follow the Level 2 Fresh Start course

For up to date course fees, which include registration with CAVA (the awarding body), please call the college on 0808 100 3626. You may be eligible for remission of fees if you receive state benefits or if the Access course is your first Level 3 qualification.
