Current president of the SU James Stafford congratulates Marie Oakton on her role as president for next academic year

West Nottinghamshire College’s Students’ Union is welcoming a new president after voting closed on Friday (4 May).

Business administration student Marie Oakton is celebrating after securing 341 votes from across the college, making her the first female president of the SU in seven years.

The 19-year-old from Sutton-in-Ashfield will begin her term as president next academic year and will take over the reins from current president James Stafford.

A jubilant Marie said: “I’m so happy!  My heart was pounding as the votes were being counted.  I worked really hard on my campaign and had great support from my friends across all college campuses.

“In the new academic year I’m keen to work hard for our students and want to improve the SU facilities and ensure everyone is kept informed of all the wonderful activities and events we’re involved in including doing more voluntary work within the community.”

Marie will be joined in the Students’ Union office by newly recruited web officer Ben Hinds who will be responsible for sharing college events and activities on the website and involvement officers Joshua Rogerson and Ashleigh Trolley who will support with events across all college campuses.
