Sarah’s a girl that can!

Posted: 23 February 2017

An A Level student at West Nottinghamshire College is thrilled at being accepted onto an inspirational national sports training programme, for females.

Twenty-year-old Sarah Maqbool is set to embrace Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ ambassador training after being nominated for taking a positive lead on the college’s student equestrian club.

She was nominated by college sport maker Robert Pearce and has secured one of just 70 places, in the UK, to place female sport leaders in various locations.

The role is designed to encourage other females to participate in physical activity and to help them overcome the fear of judgement; which often stops women and girls from joining in with sport or physical activities.

Robert said: “Sarah is a highly-motivated student and exceptional role model. She’s been inspirational in the leadership of the college’s equestrian club. After attending the healthy colleges meeting, it was evident that she had great leadership skills showing she’d be an ideal candidate for this role.

“I’m so proud she’s been accepted as one of the 70 female leaders and hopefully she’ll continue to develop her skills; inspiring more young females to take part in physical activity, both in the college and the wider community, along the way.”

Sarah will complete her training on Thursday 2 March. After this, working alongside the sport development team, Sarah will help to set up and deliver new sporting sessions within the college. She will also be helping to encourage females in the local community to join in with the national ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, in the regional events.

Sarah said: “It's absolutely amazing to be given the opportunity and chosen as a This Girl Can ambassador from the many applicants who applied. It's not just great for your CV, it’s also an awesome way to get fitter whilst encouraging others!"
