West Notts scoops bronze at inter-college sports competition

Posted: 24 June 2016

Students from West Nottinghamshire College got stuck into basketball, football, table tennis and more last week during the annual FE Games.

The college’s sport development team took 17 students to Nottingham Trent University’s Lee Westwood Sports Centre on Friday (17 June) where they joined Nottingham’s Central College, New College Nottingham, North Notts College and Newark College for a day packed full of sports at the games hosted by Sport Nottinghamshire.

The FE Games take place each year and bring colleges together who play and study sport for a day of friendly competition. It offers opportunities for students to be with like-minded people who share the same passion for sport and to improve their skills.

West Notts had a strong start winning the table tennis tournament courtesy of BTEC sport student, Cory Lightly and the college’s Students’ Union president Nick Golubs.

There were also second place scores from the men’s football team which was up against a strong side at Newark College, and basketball players from West Notts came second in the 13-9 finals.

The women’s football team joined forces with Newark’s ladies’ team who continually improved thorough the morning; finishing third in their competition.

The afternoon saw West Notts take to the stage in the badminton and touch rugby competitions. The touch rugby team put on a strong display from a team who had joined together, with some playing the sport for the very first time. Finishing a well-earned third; scoring five tries in the process, while the badminton team finished fourth.

The final activity of the day was the tug of war which saw West Notts students’ strong arms secure a second place. After a narrow defeat by Newark College, in the first heat, a small tactical change was made and West Notts went on to win the other two heats, coming second.

West Notts scooped a bronze third place award overall with 52 points, Newark College won silver with 64 points and Central College won gold with 65 points.

The Spirit of the Games Award was presented to West Notts College’s sport student Liam Harrison for his manners, politeness and encouragement throughout the games. It was presented by by Sport Nottinghamshire’s Lyn Winkworth.

West Nottinghamshire College’s sport maker Rob Pearce said: “The day proved to be really enjoyable and exciting and every student represented their game with enthusiasm and sporting spirit.

“It was fantastic to secure some first places and I was particularly proud to see some of our students getting involved in sports which they’ve never played before.

“A special well done to Liam for getting the Spirit of the Games Award as he really did shine on the day and he should be duly proud.”
