School sports festival a big hit

Posted: 26 May 2016

From beanbag relays to target throwing to agility tasks and bounce challenges, over 40 Mansfield school children took part in a sports development challenge at West Nottinghamshire College last week (18 May).

The sports festival took place in the college’s sports hall at its Derby Road campus and was organised by students on the Level 2 Activity Leadership course as well as Mansfield District Council’s sport development team.

The children, aged between seven and nine years old, came from Forest Town and King Edward primary schools, Oak Tree Primary and St Philip Neri with St Bede Catholic Voluntary Academy for a day of co-ordination and balance-challenging fun.

This is the second multi-sports festival that the current Level 2 group of students have staged at the college this year and it’s seen Mansfield District Council engage over 5,000 primary school children in multi-sports challenges over the past four years.

Sport development team leader Rob Shaw said: “Our students have worked very well once again with the children. They’ve taken into account both the kind of activities that the children will be capable of taking part in as well as what will be exciting and engaging.

“It was a very lively and well-received challenge and it was great to see every child take part in something and receive their certificates of achievement.”
