New brand brought to life by digital media students

Students have been putting their design skills together to rebrand and launch a campaign for a customer relations management company.

Creative director of Creative Race, Jason Holland, visited students at West Nottinghamshire College this month to see the results of the project he set for them earlier this year.

The entrepreneur, who works with companies such as Virgin, Travelodge, Proctor and Gamble and Halfords, gave the interactive media HND and BA creative digital media students a live project with real deadlines.

Both groups were tasked to rebrand and launch an advertising campaign for a mobile phone and presented their ideas to Jason – himself an ex-West Nottinghamshire College student.

The HND group presented Jason with their brand concepts to help develop their presentation and communication skills. The group have spent the past seven weeks generating their ideas for the campaign and applying visual communication and advertising skills to come up with a range of ideas.

Meanwhile, the degree students presented Jason with their portfolios to gain his professional feedback in preparation for the next step of gaining employment in the creative industries.

HND student Wai Tsang said: “My rebranding is still a work-in-progress at the moment, but my knowledge of certain software packages such as Photoshop and LightWave 3D have helped me to work on this.

“My design concept for the rebrand based around the idea of multiple perspectives, focusing on the idea of different viewing angles clarity. I called my phone the 'ZeroG: Shift'; shift is the phone type, derived from the concept of 'shifting perspectives'.

“Working on a live client project provides more of a distinguished objective; giving a taste of the industry and what’s expected.”

Jason added: “Visiting the very talented students at West Notts is always a highlight to my year. I get to see those who I’ve given advice to previously and check on their progress, as well as be a catalyst in the growth of new students, while giving them a ‘real world’ perspective on what will get them their dream job.”

Jason studied the First Diploma in Art and Design from 1989-90 followed by the two-year HND in Graphic Design.

He went on to launch Underwired in 1997 which won a host of awards including the World Media Festival Award, a British Interactive Media Award and the Interactive Marketing and Advertising Award for Outstanding Achievement.
