Nick Golubs secured the coveted position after gaining 270 of the 322 total votes cast.
The 21-year-old, from Sutton-in-Ashfield, succeeds outgoing president Will Jordan and begins his new role on 1 July.
Nick conducted his campaign on several key pledges including the promise to organise more charity events for students to get involved in. Not only would this raise vital funds for worthy causes, it would also enhance learners’ CVs and aid university applications, insists Nick.
He is also vowing to be a highly-visible figure at all campuses and involve more learners in students’ union activities, while pledging to regularly communicate their views to senior management.
Speaking after his landslide victory, Nick said: “I put a lot of hard work into my campaign and spoke to students at all college sites, to really understand what their priorities are and what they expect from their president.
“I’m delighted so many people put their faith in me and I can’t wait to get started. This is one of the greatest opportunities you can have.”
Nick, who studied the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism at the college, will be joined by a new students’ union executive team and a new student governor in October, following elections to the voluntary roles.
And while his immediate focus is on being a successful president, well-travelled Nick’s long-term ambition is to work in the tourism business.
Originally from Rezekne, in eastern Latvia, Nick moved to the UK six years ago after having also lived in Italy and Denmark, and counts English, Russian and Danish amongst his languages.
He said: “I enjoy learning new languages and dealing with people, which is why I see myself being in the travel and tourism industry one day. But, for now, I’m focussed on doing my very best as students’ union president.
“It’ll be an amazing experience and a great way of boosting my future career opportunities. But, above all, it’s a privilege to represent our student body.”
Former president Will, who will return to college in September to study a business management degree after working at a summer camp in America, said: “Congratulations to Nick on his well-deserved election. I had a fantastic 12 months in the role, meeting lots of great people and learning many things, and I’m sure it will be equally as enjoyable for him.”
