Teaching qualifications

Further Education National Training Organisation (FENTO) standards have changed from 1st September 2007. The new awards have been developed by Life Long Learning (LLUK). New entrants into the Further Education Sector will have to undertake the appropriate stage of the new teaching qualifications, these are summarised below:

C & G 7302 L3/4 Preparing to Teach in Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Compulsory first step All new teachers or prospective teachers
C & G 7407 stage 2 L3/4 Certificate in Teaching or (CTLLS) Associate Teacher Someone who is supported in their teaching role, this applies irrespective of whether the post is full time or part time or across one or more subject areas. Typically this means delivery from pre written materials, perhaps on a 1:1 basis on a programme confined to a particular level/subject or type of learner or on a short course.

Cert Ed Year 2
Cert Ed or L5/6/7 Diploma in Teaching (DTLLS) QTLS (fully qualified to teach) Someone who teaches fully and unsupported in all areas of teaching including curriculum design development assessment and delivery. Typically they use materials they have designed and evaluated work across a range of levels, subjects and learners and work across or contribute to a range of programmes of varying lengths.

To gain Associate Teacher, Learning and Skills (ATLS) status teachers will be required to gain a recognised teaching qualification at level 4 or above and provide evidence of effective professional practice by undergoing ‘Professional Formation’ with the IFL.

To gain Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status teachers will be required to gain a recognised teaching qualification at level 5 or above and provide evidence of effective professional practice by undergoing ‘Professional Formation’ with the IFL.

Continuing Professional Development

From September 2007 every full time teacher will be required to complete at least 30 hours CPD per academic year. This is pro-rata for part-time teachers to a minimum of 6 hours per academic year.

IfL Registration (Institute for Learning)

All teachers including associate teachers must register as a member of the Institute for Learning (IfL) and maintain registration continuously.

Supporting/Teaching Literacy & Numeracy

In addition to the requirements of a full teacher those who teach literacy and numeracy are required to hold a current level 3 qualification in each of the subjects they deliver together with the relevant teaching subject specialist qualifications.
