A return to Ghana is planned this summer
Students at West Nottinghamshire College are preparing themselves for another volunteering trip to Ghana this year, starting with developing their teaching skills at a Mansfield primary school next week (Tues 9 Feb).
Five students together with members of staff will join year 4 pupils at King Edward Primary School, on St Andrew’s Street, Mansfield, to take part in a creative workshop where youngsters will be taught how to hand-paint onto canvas.
The canvas will contain personal messages from the students in the UK and will be presented to children in Ghana this summer.
Student governor Sam Allen said: “Next week’s visit will give our students the opportunity to try out their teaching skills with the primary school pupils. We will be creating a canvas collage and encouraging the children to describe their lives, families and interests through art.
“When we visit the school in the village of Mpraeso, Ghana, in July for two weeks, we will take the collage with us and ask the children to produce the same for us to present to King Edward Primary School on our return. It is hoped that this will be the start of a new link between the schools.”
College students are busy fundraising for their two-week visit to Ghana with a wide-range of activities including raffles, bag-packing in supermarkets and a sponsored skydiving activity.
